Ritesh Agarwal hails from a Marwari family and was born in Bissam Cuttack, Odisha, India. His upbringing took place in Titilagarh, a small town in Southern Odisha where his family ran a modest shop. Ritesh’s educational journey began at Sacred Heart School in Rayagada, and at the tender age of 13, he embarked on his entrepreneurial journey by selling SIM cards. He furthered his education at St. Johns Senior Secondary School on Bundi Road, Kota, Rajasthan, before making a significant move to Delhi in 2011 to pursue higher studies.
However, Ritesh decided to chart his own path and dropped out of college. In a remarkable turn of events, he was chosen for the prestigious Thiel Fellowship, an initiative started by entrepreneur Peter Thiel, in the year 2013.
On the personal front, Ritesh Agarwal tied the knot with Geetansha Sood, a Lucknow native, on March 7, 2023.
Venturing
into Entrepreneurship
Ritesh’s entrepreneurial journey took off with the inception of Oravel Stays, a platform dedicated to budget accommodation and hotel bookings. Oravel Stays gained significant recognition when it was accepted into the accelerator program by Venture Nursery in September 2012. The pinnacle of this venture came when Ritesh Agarwal was selected as one of the winners of the 2013 Thiel Fellowship program, receiving a grant of $100,000. Subsequently, the company was rebranded as OYO Rooms in May 2013.
The growth trajectory of OYO Rooms was remarkable. By September 2018, the company had successfully raised a staggering $1 billion in funding. In July 2019, Ritesh Agarwal made headlines by purchasing $2 billion worth of shares in the company, thereby tripling his stake and solidifying his commitment to OYO Rooms.

Ritesh Agarwal’s achievements extended beyond the business realm. In 2020, his net worth was estimated to be approximately $1.1 billion (₹7253 crore), earning him a place on the prestigious Hurun Rich List 2020. As of February 2020, he held the distinction of being the youngest self-made billionaire globally.
